भारत का इतिहास विविधताओं से भरा पड़ा है। कदम-कदम पर यहां एक ऐसी कहानी या हकीकत से सामना होता है जो एक बारगी अचरज तो पैदा करती है लेकिन अगर वो सच है तो उसे अपनाने के अलावा और कोई विकल्प भी नहीं होता।
निश्चित तौर पर भारत(India) में कुछ विषय शुरुआत से ही चर्चित रहे हैं, जिनमें जादू-टोने(Black magic), भूत-प्रेत(Ghost), राजनीति(Politics) के अलावा महिलाओं की स्थिति शामिल हैं।आज भले ही महिलाएं अपने दम पर अपने लिए नया मुकाम गढ़ रही हैं और उन्हें हासिल भी कर रही हैं, लेकिन भारत के इतिहास पर नजर डालें तो शुरुआती समय से ही महिलाओं को सिर्फ भोग्या ही समझा जाता रहा है। वेश्यावृत्ति (sex workers)को तो भारत के सबसे पुराने पेशे के तौर भी जाना जाना जाता है।वर्तमान दौर में वेश्याओं को समाज की हीनभावना का शिकार होना पड़ता है लेकिन शुरुआत से ऐसा कभी नहीं था, क्योंकि भारत में वेश्याओं का इतिहास बेहद दिलचस्प और शान-शौकत से भरा रहा है।.
इतिहास की सबसे खूबसूरत स्त्री के रूप में प्रख्यात आम्रपाली(Amarpali) को भी वेश्या बनना स्वीकारना पड़ा। वह किसी की पत्नी तो नहीं बन सकी लेकिन संपूर्ण नगर की नगरवधू जरूर बन गई।
आम्रपाली ने अपने लिए ये जीवन स्वयं नहीं चुना था, बल्कि वैशाली(VAISHALI) में शांति बनाए रखने, गणराज्य की अखंडता बरकरार रखने के लिए उसे किसी एक की पत्नी ना बनाकर नगर को सौंप दिया गया। आम्रपाली के जैविक माता-पिता का तो पता नहीं लेकिन जिन लोगों ने उसका पालन किया उन्हें वह एक आम के पेड़ के नीचे मिली थी, जिसकी वजह से उसका नाम आम्रपाली रखा गया।खूबसूरत नैन-नक्श वाली आम्रपाली को हर कोई अपनी जीवन संगिनी बनाना चाहता था, लेकिन वह किसकी अर्धांगिनी(Wife) बनेगी इस बात पर नगर में शीत युद्ध सा माहौल पैदा हो गया था, अगर वह किसी एक का हाथ थामती तो अन्य लोग आक्रोश में आ जाते, इसलिए उसके भाग्य में कुछ ऐसा लिख दिया गया जिसकी कल्पना तक उसने नहीं की होगी। वह वैशाली(Vaishali) की नगरवधू बन गई, जिसके आगे अमीर से अमीर व्यक्ति, हर नामचीन हस्ती अपना सिर झुकाती थी और उसकी सोहबत के लिए तरसती थी। यह भी कहा जाता है कि आलीशान महल और सभी सुख-सुविधाओं से लैस जीवन व्यतीत करने वाली आम्रपाली के पास इतनी धन-दौलत थी कि वह राजा (King) को भी पैसे उधार दिया करती थी।
आम्रपाली अकेली ऐसी शख्सियत नहीं थी वरन् इतिहास ऐसी स्त्रियों की कहानियों से भरा हुआ है। फर्क बस यही है कि पहले हर स्त्री इनकी शान, खूबसूरती और लोकप्रियता से जलन करती थी और खुद अपने लिए ऐसा ही भविष्य(Future) मांगती थी वहीं जब से उन्हें ‘कोठेवाली’ की संज्ञा दी जाने लगी तबसे उनकी छवि खराब होने लगी। वेश्यावृत्ति(Prostitution) के इतिहास को रामायण और महाभारत काल से भी जोड़ा जा सकता है, प्राचीन समय से ही यह समाज का हिस्सा रहा है।
पहले नर्तकी या नगरवधू कही जाती थीं, जिनका काम अपनी शरण में आए पुरुषों को प्रेम की अनुभूति प्रदान करना होता था। फिर उन्हें ‘कोठेवाली’ की संज्ञा दी गई और अब उन्हें बस एक ही नाम से जाना जाता है ‘वेश्या’(.Prostitute )।मुगल काल के शासक वेश्याओं की बुद्धिमानी और उनकी सुंदरता, दोनों के ही कायल थे। वह उन्हें अपने जीवन में खास महत्व देते थे।आज के दौर में भले ही मजबूरी की वजह से महिलाएं वेश्यावृत्ति को चुनती हों लेकिन पहले यह एक गर्व और गुमान करने वाली बात होती थी।
मध्ययुगीन काल में वेश्याओं (Prostitute)
की स्थिति बद से बदतर होती गई। पहले देवदासी प्रथा का चलन और बाद में अपनी इच्छानुसार स्त्री (Women) की देह का शोषण करना पुरुष प्रधान समाज अपना अधिकार समझता था।
ब्रिटिश(British) काल के दौरान वेश्याओं के जीवन को थोड़ी राहत मिलने लगी। वेश्यालयों और कोठों पर रहने वाली औरतें फिल्मी दुनिया में आकर अपनी किस्मत के चमकने की राह देखने लगीं। अब फिर से उनका जीवन एक अंधेरी खाई की ओर फिसलता जा रहा है और शायद पुरुषों के आधिपत्य वाले इस समाज में अब किसी सुधार की उम्मीद भी बेमानी है।

Amrapali was not the only person but history is full of stories of such women. The only difference is that earlier every woman was jealous of their elegance, beauty and popularity and sought such a future for herself, whereas from the time she started being labeled as 'Kothewali', her image started getting tarnished. The history of prostitution can also be linked to the Ramayana and Mahabharata times, it has been a part of society since ancient times.
Previously it was called dancer or nagarvadhu, whose job was to provide a feeling of love to the men who came to his shelter. Then she was called 'Kothewali' and is now known by the same name as 'prostitute' (. Prostitute). The rulers of the Mughal period were convinced of both the intelligence and their beauty. He used to give them special importance in his life. Even today, due to compulsion, women would choose prostitution, but earlier it was a proud and pretentious thing.
