About the district VAISHALI
Vaishali holds its original place in history since the Mahabharata period. It is the place where democracy found its original place around 600BC. Many references to Vaishali are found in texts related to Jainism and Buddhism, which have preserved much information about Vaishali and other Mahajanapadas. Based on the information found in these texts, Vaishali was established as a republic in the 6th century BC, before the birth of Gautama Buddha in 563, making it the first republic in the world. Being the birthplace of the last Jain "Tirthankara", Lord Mahavira gives Vaishali a very special place in history. The founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha, gave his final sermon and announced his Parinirvan (attainment of enlightenment) on this sacred soil. It is also famous as the land of Ambapali (Amrapali) of the great Indian court. It is believed that the name of the district is derived from King Vishal. However, history records that when Pataliputra was the center of political, cultural and economic activities in the Gangetic plains, Vaishali came into existence as the center of the Ganges, it was the seat of the Vajaji Republic.
Vaishali is credited with being the first republic in the world to have a duly elected assembly of representatives and efficient administration. The district attained the status of independent district on 12-10-1972, before which it was a part of the old Muzaffarpur district. The district headquarters of Vaishali was named after a king of Bengal named Haji Ilyas Shah (1345 to 1358 AD), who founded it. He built a fort at Hajipur, inside which was a mosque, called the Jami Masjid, which had a building of 84.5 feet. (25. (meters) long and 33.5 feet (10.2 meters) wide, which in ancient times was called Ukkkala.
The district is spread over an area of 2036 sq km and has a population of 25 ° 41 spreadN 85 ° 13.6E / 25.68 ° N 85.22 ° E.
